When trying to select some nodes (using 'Select This Node and all Children'), I eventually get an Unhandled Exception that reads like this:

Hi,

I have tried using several versions of PackageThis (including v1.3.10), and on many pages of the TechNet library it does not download all page contents. For example, downloading this page with PackageThis does not include all content in the offline version: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574118.aspx

Most of the page contents in the offline version is missing. I've noticed this symptom with many other pages too.

I looked at this today.

The problem is there is a class that downloads all data into memory containers.

Then another class dumps the data to actual files.

There would be a lot of work merging these classes. But it's possible and really it has to be done at some stage. I totally agree. The code is there if you want to give it a go.

I like this tool, but it never worked for me. I have lost GBs/MBs of data as it crashes in between.

I also tried creating a small .chm file with just 2 children. It creates the chm file. But when I open .chtm file, It shows nothing other than "Page cannot b displayed".

Let me know if I am missing any step. I like this tool, but it never worked!

Could you add a new menu item to select an existing working directory of a previous session?
This would make it possible to download some items, close the application, restart the application, download other items then export to compiled help.

Considering this tree:
1
+- 1.1 --> many other children
+- 1.2 --> many other children
+- 1.3 --> many other children
+- 1.4 --> many other children

Currently, if the user wants to download 1.1 and 1.4, he has two options:
a. Select a with all children then unselect 1.2 and 1.3. This works but is *very* long. Furtherthemore, it will download information just to delete it after.
b. Select 1.1, wait, select 1.3, wait *again*

The improvement would be very simple:
1. Every children enumeration would be done in background. There would be multiple "Downloading content" MODELESS windows at the same time.
2. Every window would display the hierarchy of what is currently downloaded (a progress-bar would be very nice but quite difficult to refresh with correct pregression). I think it is vrey important to remind the user what he selected.
3. Unless there is no "Downloading content", all "Export to ..." menus wolud be grayed.

With these improvements, the user can select more quickly what he wants to download and package, with few efforts in developpement.

Fixed in 1.3.6, but still not all pages that come from MS has correct links, e.g.

In a web browser it looks ok, it concerns download. When I click on the tree item in 'Package This' I get images with one names (look at raw folder), then when I download html it contains links to image files with different names.

There is a strong need for a program makeing selected parts of MSDN or technet available locally!

But PackageThis V1.3.4 is far from being usable.

Please do NOT build on .NET! .NET is a pain in the guts, because it is a fat package constantly requiring security updates, for multiple versions in parallel (this is the LARGEST fault of it).

The prg must not start downloading a lot until instructed to do so. I like to make my selections first. Any downloads needed to make this selections are accepted. But if I say "this node and all children", there is NO need to download anything in that moment.

It must offer an option to re-try all failed downloads. Currently it marks them red, but what happens then?

I like to see an option to export a lean html version locally, not just packaging into some of the help formats.

Of course, help format packing must be reliable. On try to package the MSDN WDK stuff to Chm a few days ago I got exception "Illegal characters in path" exception from "Microsoft .NET framework" The project folder already exists. See below.

Means no usable result after this try.

If the chm compiler is not installed, give a message box, like for the 2 others, instead of an exception. See below.

I said "this and children" to a red-marked leaf node. Result was start of download, for this, but for much more going after it up the hierarchy, too.

I understand the source is open and there for others to improve. But VERY SORRY, I cannot do everything myself. Nevertheless, I will try to help as far as my resources permit.
